The general learning objectives for the Flight Instructor Refresher course are:
- Establish and maintain professional credibility;
- Maintain and continuously improve professional knowledge and skills;
- Plan and conduct training in accordance with regulatory requirements;
- Conduct instruction in an ethical manner;
- Stimulate and sustain learner motivation and engagement;
- Evaluate the effectiveness of instruction.
Day 1
Welcome / Ice Breaker
Flight Instructor Guide
By the end of this workshop, the participants will be able to:
- Improve their understanding of instructional skills;
- Apply as appropriate to PGI and airborne instruction.
Threat and Error Management (TEM)
By the end of this workshop, the participants will be able to:
- Explain aviation physiology, psychology and ergonomics;
- Recognise common errors, procedural errors and poor equipment handling to avoid undesirable states;
- Propose "what if" questions to stimulate decision making activity;
- Develop in flight situations to exercise critical thinking skills;
- Conduct the post flight briefing and critique the self assessment by training pilot;
- Apply TEM to scenario based situations.
Flight Safety Brief
By the end of this workshop, the participants will be able to:
- Explain the five elements of SMS;
- Explain their role as a flight instructor within SMS.
Preparatory Ground Instruction (PGI Prep)
By the end of this workshop, the participants will be able to:
- Present an effective PGI on selected exercises from the flight training manual using the FIG;
- Suggest improvements for observed PGI.
Day 2
Preparatory Ground Instruction (PGI Workshop)
By the end of this workshop, the participants will be able to:
- Present an effective PGI on selected exercises from the flight training manual using the FIG;
- Suggest improvements for observed PGI.
Winter Weather Hazards
By the end of this workshop, the participants will be able to:
- Explain weather hazards associated with winter flying;
- Identify development of hazardous weather.
Airborne & Debrief
By the end of this workshop, the participants will be able to:
- Improve airborne techniques through identification of weak flight test items;
- Improve debriefings.
Aircraft Pre flight inspection
- Participants may be divided into groups and be lead by an AME & pilot through a pre-flight of the Grob. By the end of the workshop, the participants will be able to assess through insight, problem areas dealing with composites.
Day 3
Flight Training Weak Area's / Flight Tests
By the end of this workshop, the participants will be able to:
- Explain the purpose of flight testing;
- Identify recent changes to the flight test guides;
- Examine low score areas on flight tests;
- Brainstorm effective training strategies to improve learning in these areas.
Learning About Positive Learning: Set Yourself Up For Success
By the end of this workshop, the participants will be able to:
- Explain the importance of creating a positive learning environment;
- Identify effective teaching methodology: Maximizing students' potential;
- Record keeping strategies to empower your students' future performance;
- Examine what is behind low score areas on written tests and flight tests;
- Brainstorm effective training strategies to improve the learning environment.
ATC and Their Airspace
By the end of this workshop, the participants will be able to:
- Identify common errors with the application of controlled airspace regulations;
- Explain the philosophy behind CADORS and the reporting process.
Ground School / Written Exams
By the end of this workshop, the participants will be able to:
- Identify the weak knowledge areas from the Transport Canada web site with respect to the following written exams: PPL, CPL;
- Examine low score areas on written tests;
- Brainstorm effective training strategies to improve learning in these areas.
Course Wrap-up
